New Delhi: Lok Sabha has approved a Bill, making mandatory the sharing of live feed of all national sporting events by private TV channels with Doordarshan.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi announced the ruling in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. Union Minister and BCCI President Sharad Pawar, too, had met with the I & B Minister to resolve the situation.

Nimbus, the rights holders for all first-class cricket played in India had earlier threatened to terminate the multi-million dollar contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unless the issue of encryption of feed was sorted out.

It later softened its stand however, deciding not to pull out of its four-year deal with the Indian Cricket Board.

The private broadcaster has alleged that forcing them to share the feed with public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati is a violation of their rights because the signal spills over into other countries and can be pirated.

According to an earlier agreement worked out, Nimbus was to provide its feed for all domestic international matches with a seven-minute deferred telecast.

Prasar Bharati's objective of public service broadcasting is to be achieved though All India Radio and Doordarshan.
