MADURAI: Madurai corporation North Zone Chairman K Esakki Muthu (65), one of his close aides and an assistant engineer of the corporation were arrested on charges of assaulting a fish vendor, here on Tuesday. The South Gate police had filed the FIR against Esakki Muthu and three others _ Gnanasekaran (35) of Pudur, Subramanian(46), assistant engineer in north zone, and Ponnusamy (46), an office assistant of the Madurai corporation. Later, the police arrested the three except Ponnusamy.According to the police, M Hakkim of South Veli Street here was running a fish shop in Pudur for a long time. As Esakki Muthu held sway over this area due to his political influence, he allegedly insisted upon Hakkim to give bribe for running the shop. He used the corporation officials, including an assistant engineer, to collect money from him in 2010. In order to avoid their interference, Hakkim gave them `10,000 to solve the issue amicably. However, Esakki Muthu and others pressurised him to give an additional amount of `5,000. As Hakkim did not oblige, the accused in connivance with some officers demolished his shop in 2010 citing official reason for their action. Later, they threatened him saying that they demolished the shop to take revenge.A desperate Hakkim had sought police help in this matter, and this had angered Esakki Muthu. On Tuesday morning, all the accused intercepted Hakkim in Chinnakadai Street and vented their ire at him. Hence, Hakkim filed a complaint. Based on his complaint, Esakki Muthu was taken for interrogation at 10 am. After a day-long inquiry, the police officially declared the arrest The police have filed FIR under section 147, 148 , 341, 323. 307 and 506(2). The police produced the accused persons at the judicial magistrate court-IV where the magistrate ordered to remand them in Madurai central prison.
