Martyrs Week: More obelisks erected

Meetings marked the end of the Maoist Martyrs’ Week on Friday with the rebels paying respects to the comrades killed in police encounters at the newly erected obelisks in interior areas.

The week was more or less peaceful with tight security and the presence of Border Security Force in areas considered Maoist strongholds forcing the rebels to lie low.

However, throwing a challenge at Indian Reserve Battalion Forces, the Maoists killed a tribal Special Police Officer, Ajit Sodi, at Podia on Sunday last.

As a precaution, vehicles remained off the road, all week long, affecting communication between Malkangiri and Jeypore.

In a meeting held in the dense forests of Kurmanur and Poplur on Thursday, more than a hundred took out a procession. Later, the Maoist leaders urged the villagers to join them.

At least 20 memorials were reportedly erected at Kalimela, Chitrakonda, Khairput, Motu, Podia and other cut-off regions during the week.
