BANGALORE: In a broad daylight murder on the outskirts of the city, a 72-year-old bachelor, was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants on Monday afternoon. The deceased Shantha Kumar, a resident of Jayanagar, reportedly owned property worth over Rs 250 crore. According to police, Kumar had gone attend a hearing of a land dispute at Anekal court. Accompanied by his two guards, he was at a hotel which is a few metres away from the court. At around 2.30 pm, the trio came out of the hotel, when three miscreants threw chilly powder at the them and hacked Kumar with lethal weapons and sped away on a bike. Kumar sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.The public was rattled by the attack due to which nobody noted down the registration number of the bike. It is said one of the miscreants had worn helmet.Bangalore Rural DySp A Kumaraswamy said that Kumar owned about 22 acres of land on Huskur Main Road in Hebbagodi and had decided to sell it for `65 crore in 2005. “Kumar had accused that one, Nagendra Reddy had forcibly taken away the property documents. CID police had investigated the case and had arrested Reddy. However, he was released later and he presently owns a farm house on the disputed land. Kumar had come to attend the hearing. Reddy would be questioned in connection with the murder,” he said.Also, Kumar owned around 10 acres of land at BTM Layout worth Rs 200 crore. “Kumar had also filed a case in High Court and city civil court as the land had been allegedly encroached by land sharks,” the police added. “Kumar was attacked once about a month ago. He had filed a case in Banashankari police station. After this, he had hired to security guards,” the police said.
