New Delhi: India is experiencing a warm Winter, this season. Winter arrived late and it is not yet that cold in most parts of India. Even the Gangetic plains of the North which are very cold during December are witnessing warm days. Thick woollen clothes are still in the wardrobes, heaters are not switched on and the people are worried. The entire Deccan (comprising southern states) is also unusually warm.
The people blame the unprecedented rain in Tamil Nadu for the missing winter in the South. Comparison of 2014's temperature on December 29 with 2015's temperature on the same day throws up some really worrying facts. Just two weeks after the Roadto2Degree Celsius meet at Paris got over, the temperature is actually rising.
The national capital is also warmer than what it was on the same day a year ago. Delhi’s maximum and minimum temperature on December 29, 2015 is 24 – 9 degree Celsius respectively. It was 22-6 degree Celsius a year ago on the same day. 2-3 degree Celsius up in just one year.
Even in "Queen of the Hills" Shimla, the temperature is up by 1 degree Celsius on December 29, 2015. It was 16 and 3 degree Celsius respectively on December 29, 2014. In 2015, it is 17 and 4 degree Celsius respectively.
Even in Srinagar, capital of Jammu and Kashmir, it is up by 1-2 degree Celsius when compared to 2014. It was 10 and minus 4 on December 29, 2014, and in 2015, it is 12 and minus 5 degree Celsius on the same day.
Entire Deccan plateau is unusually hot this Winter. On December 29, 2014, Bengaluru recorded a minimum of 17 degree Celsius and maximum of 28 degree Celsius. In 2015, on the same day, maximum temperature is 30 degree Celsius and minimum is 15 degree Celsius. In Chennai, Maximum temperature is up by alarming 7 degree Celsius. It was 25 and 22 degree Celsius respectively on December 29, 2014 and on the same day in 2015, maximum temperature is 32 and minimum is 22 degree Celsius respectively.
In Hyderabad it was 29 and 16 degree Celsius on December 29, 2014. On December 29, 2015, it is a maximum of 33 degree Celsius and a minimum of 11 degree Celsius respectively.
In Visakhapatnam, it was a maximum of 25 degree Celsius and a minimum of 20 degree Celsius on December 29, 2014. In 2015 on the same day, Visakhapatnam has registered a maximum of 31 degree Celsius and a minimum of 16 degree Celsius respectively.
The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change claims in its latest report that winter in India will be warmer in the next years, specifically between 2016-2035. Temperatures may rise by half to one degree in north India. Also, rising temperatures will usher Monsoons earlier than usual. What impact this will have on monsoon-dependent crops is currently being analyzed.
