New Delhi: Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi on Monday batted for a ban on triple talaq, saying this practice is "unconstitutional, punishable, and violates gender equality" in the country.
"In a secular country like India where women of a particular religion are treated like cattle, such a practice should be banned," he told CNN-News18, adding that Government of India had already filed an affidavit, and the court must declare the triple talaq as unconstitutional.
Rohtagi also spoke on the ongoing unrest in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the light of several videos that surfaced on social media, sparking outrage.
First, a video purportedly showed a protester kicking the shins of a jawan. However, the jawan, despite being hit, walked away calmly. A day later, another video showing a man tied to the front of an army jeep made its way to social media, eliciting widespread criticism.
Rohtagi said that the Major didn't do anything wrong because, according to Rohtagi, he saved the lives of a lot of people there. "It was one of those spur-of-the-moment decisions... If Army major got away without hurting anybody, it's a great job."
Appreciating the efforts of the Major, Rohtagi said that at the end of the day, Major didn't do "anything wrong, considering the circumstances".
When asked about the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Attorney General thought that Indian forces were working under "challenging circumstances in Kashmir", and said, "these are disturbing times and AFSPA can stay in Jammu and Kashmir for now."
