Nine Dead After Consuming Spurious Liquor in UP's Barabanki District

Lucknow: Nine people died after consuming spurious liquor in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district on Thursday.

Two others have been admitted to a hospital and their condition is stated to be serious.

The victims have been identified as Nomilal, Kamalesh Kumar, Umesh Kumar, Kanshiram, Avniesh, Rakesh Kumar, Ramphal Gautam, Mata Prasad, Ramsuresh. Doctors said most of them complained of stomach ache and were vomiting.

Dr. AK Singh, posted in emergency duty at the Barabanki district hospital, said that people who were brought in had consumed spirit and were sent to the Lucknow Trauma Center.

Anil Kumar Singh, Additional District Magistrate, said, "There are reports of death due to the consumption of spurious alcohol. We can ascertain the reason behind death only after the postmortem report is received."

State Excise Minister Jai Pratap Singh has ordered a probe and asked for a report from the District Magistrate.

According to sources, the Excise Department officials pressured some the families of the dead to state that the deaths were due to cold if they want to get compensation.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 Lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. The CM also directs a joint team of Excise department and Home Ministry to investigate the matter.
