NRIs make inroads into Punjab
The NRI community is making sure that they get a smooth ride when they come back to their native state.

New Delhi: The Punjab is home to thousands of NRIs across the world. And they're tired of the bumpy roads in their hometown.

Now, NRI's are paving the way for a smoother ride. Road repair work is on in full swing in Kapurthala, Punjab, and its not the state government but the NRIs who have taken the task to repair the potholed roads.

They have formed a road repair committee and set a target of 500 kilometres to be repaired every year.

"We have been receiving complaints from people on the condition of the roads, especially from those who have come from outside and are back in the country. We have formed the road repair committee to repair roads and do the patch work in these areas," said Pritam Singh, former president, NRI Sabha.

The committee is taking technical assistance from the state government and the Public Works Department, all other costs will be borne by the NRI's.

However, they are seeking more government help for construction and maintenance of the road.
