THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “There is no other way for Oommen Chandy but to quit,” said a beaming Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan after the Vigilance Special Court passed indirect insinuations against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the palmolein case. “He should think whether to cling to power, especially when he had taken a stand that he will deal with the case legally and morally,” Achuthanandan told mediapersons here.“The observations made by the Vigilance court in the case is akin to the character of a verdict itself,’’ he said, welcoming the developments. Achuthanandan said that he had been waging a fight against corruption in the palmolein case in and out of the Assembly for the past 19 years “Irrespective of the hurdles and delay, the truth in the palmolein deal will come out in the end,’’ he said. VS had a further dig at Chandy by reminding what he had reportedly written to the Congress high command before the Assembly polls of his stance in the palmolein case and hoped that he will stick to his stand.Deputy Leader of the Opposition Kodiyeri Balakrishnan asked Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to relinquish charge of the Vigilance Department and also remove the incumbent Vigilance director from the post in view of the adverse observations made by the Vigilance Special Court. “The Vigilance department is under the Chief Minister. It is doubtful whether an impartial probe would be possible by the Vigilance Department under such circumstances. While insisting on transparency in everything, the Chief Minister should set a model by relinquishing charge of the Vigilance wing,” he demanded. Otherwise, there is every possibility of the fresh probe by the Vigilance as directed by the court getting influenced, he told a news conference. CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan was more forthright and demanded that Oommen Chandy should quit in view of the observations made by the Vigilance Special Court.
