BANGALORE: The High Court is expected to pass an interim order on Thursday on a government notification making speed governors mandatory in all public transport vehicles, including goods vehicles. The court is hearing a petition filed by the Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners and Agents Associations, challenging the rule which makes speed governors in all public transport vehicles mandatory. The petitioners stated that the notification was issued under Section 188 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. As per the notification issued on September 17, all new vehicles have to be fitted with speed governors from November 2. As far as old vehicles are concerned, June 30, 2012 is the deadline. According to these rules, a vehicle can travel up to 65 kmph only. “When the government is building expressways and six-lane roads, the insistence on speed governors defies logic,” the petitioners contended.Senior Counsel for the petitioners Jaikumar S Patil stated that implementation of the government rules will affect interstate vehicles very much. After the hearing the arguments, Justice S Abdul Nazeer reserved the interim order.
