Maharashtra: The Malvani hooch tragedy in Mumbai claimed over 100 lives yet no lesson seems have been learnt. Illegal liquor shops continue to thrive in Maharashtra due to the nexus between bootleggers and local officials.
The toxic liquor that killed hundreds in Malvani contained dangerous levels of Methanol. The Mumbai Police started a massive crackdown on liquor dens soon after in the incident. However, the relatives of the deceased claim that the authorities knew about illicit liquor much before the incident took place.
"The cops knew everything. They are also responsible. Why would they help when they were given bribe to keep their mouths shut and let the business grow," says Taira Kolalkar, wife of one of the victims.
Giving credence to their claims, the officials have admitted that the tragedy would not have happened without the active connivance of police and excise officers.
Even as the focus is on establishing the chain of supply of the deadly methanol, the widows of the deceased stare at a dark future. "I'm left with two kids. There is nothing left in my life. I only have responsibilities to take care of kids. I want some future for my children," says wife of a deceased Varsha Yadav.
