New Delhi: Hollywood star Penelope Cruz's tryst with India is running into a royal mess even before her planned date.
Cruz's new movie, The Princess of Kapurthala - based on the novel Passion India by Javier Moro - seems to have rubbed the Kapurthala royal family in a wrong way even before the project can take off.
The Kapurthala royalty is miffed at the Spanish actress's efforts at making the movie and the heir of the family, Tikka Shatrujit Singh, is ready to go to court over the issue to seek an injunction on the movie, which is based on his grandfather Maharaja Jagatjit Singh.
If Tikka Shatrujit Singh wins the case, then Cruz may not be allowed to shoot for the film in India.
Though Passion India is a work of fiction, what strengthens Singh's case is the fact that the name of his grandfather has been used.
Shatrujit Singh said that the author Javier Moro had earlier approached his father in order to gain information about the royalty. When his father refused to cooperate, Moro decided to go ahead with the book in anyway.
Singh also claims that the author misled the audience and the film producers by telling them that the book is based on facts.
The movie, which is set in the years when the sun was setting over the British rule in India, is the story of a Spanish Flamenco dancer, Anita Delgado, who landed in the midst of a scandal when she agreed to marry an Indian king in 1908.
The movie will have an Indian hero, though the actor who will play the role of the Indian King will be finalised only during Cruz's visit to India in January, to scour for locations for the shoot.
Cruz herself will direct part of the movie, as she has already bought the rights of the book. She says that the story is full of passion, intrigue and betrayal and thus will be as interesting to make as view.
