CHENNAI: Hitting out at the TN Dr MGR Medical University’s decision to swap the centres for PG exams between the three major medical colleges in the city, the TN Government Doctors Association on Monday called for immediate resignation of Vice Chancellor Mayilvahanan Natarajan.Following an announcement that the KMC, MMC and Stanley Medical College would not be allowed to conduct exams as it was “suspected that teachers were aiding students to cheat,” the doctors sprung into action.According to association general secretary Dr Balakrishnan, such moves “were undemocratic, unfair and appeared to be targeting the faculty and students of Stanley Medical College.”He attributed the decision to the fact that they had been at the forefront of the agitation against the varsity. He also questioned why the V-C chose to make these changes two months later.“If he wished to take such stringent action, why not do so for all medical colleges in the State and only stop at these three prestigious colleges?” he queried. They have also appealed to the Chief Minister and the Governor to dismiss the Vice Chancellor. “If this is not done, we will refrain from any part of the exam process,” he added. However, sources close to the varsity’s administration have responded that “changes will be slow and difficult to swallow, but will have to be followed.” While students held mass agitations throughout last year, this is the first time that the faculty have made such a bold statement against the famed orthopedic surgeon.
