New Delhi: After appealing the Supreme Court to lift stay on OBC reservations, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held talks with BJP leaders and opposition parties to evolve a common ground on the vexed issue.
Leaders of UPA constituents and the Left parties held a meeting two-days back over the same issue. Monday’s meeting, held separately, was attended by Senior BJP leaders V K Malhotra, Arun Jaitley, Ravi Shanker Prasad and TDP's Yerran Naidu.
Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh, Law Minister H R Bharadwaj and Defence Minister A K Anthony also attended the meetings.
"We put forth our views. We told them that the government has to take some decision in this regard whatever it deems fit," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad was quoted by PTI.
Unfazed by the Supreme Court order on the OBC quota issue, Government had said after its meeting with leaders of UPA and Left parties last week that it will take all "appropriate steps" to ensure that the 27 per cent reservation for backward classes becomes operational from the coming academic session.
The UPA had said it will consult other political parties in order to implement reservations at the earliest. The SC order staying the central law had led to demands from across the political spectrum that the government must act fast to get the stay vacated.
Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh had declared that all constitutional and legal measures would be taken to ensure that the quota issue is resolved at the earliest.
