Professor predicted eco-fallout

CHENNAI: The ecological fallout of the Nemmeli desalination plant was predicted by a Canadian professor last year itself.Speaking to Express during his visit to IIT-Madras, Prof Slobodan Simonovis of the University of Western Ontario had said, “Desalination plants worldwide are known for causing coastline erosion and saltwater intrusion into groundwater. They are costly and can be called beneficial only for countries like Dubai and Singapore, which lack natural resources. India has abundant monsoon rains. All that you have to do is maintain tanks and storage areas for rainwater.”
