MALAPPURAM: The district has a lot to celebrate as Finance Minister K M Mani presented his ninth budget speech in the Legislative Assembly on Friday. The budget has allocated funds for many projects including a new medical college and a Malayalam university in the district, which have been demanded by the people here for many years. The budget has allocated Rs 1 crore for the ‘Ezhuthachan Malayalam University’ to be established in Tirur. Of the Rs 5 crore allocated for starting medical colleges in the state, the district will get a share. Apart from that, Rs 1 crore has been announced for the development of basic facilities at the Educational and Health Hub in Panakkad. An equal amount is apportioned for the drinking water project in Vengara and neighbouring panchayats.The budget also envisages creation of Valluvanadu Development Authority including Perinthalmanna municipality and the neighbouring panchayats to speed up the development of the region in the wake of the Aligarh Muslim University off-campus has started functioning here. A sum of Rs 25 lakh has been allocated for its primary expenses. The budget gives focus to the development of transportation facilities in the district as well. An amount of Rs 10 crore has been allocated to Manjeri and Mambaram each for constructing ring roads which will connect to the main roads in these towns. Ponnani- Vengalam coastal road, Kanjippura-Moodal road and Angadippuram-Valanchery road have found place in the list of important roads to be upgraded, for which Rs 200 crore has been sanctioned. Rs 10 lakh has been allocated for linking the water ways at Odumbram and Koottayi through Canoli canal to start a boat service here. As per the budget, the district will have a new sub-court at Tirur, a new sub treasury at Kottakkal and a hypermarket in Nilambur in due course of time. The budget also proposed the construction of a stadium at Manjeri.
