Ahmedabad: Asaram has claimed innocence in the sexual assault allegation levelled against him by a 16-year-old girl. The self-styled godman said that the allegation is baseless and those who have accused him should prove that he is guilty of the crime.
He targeted the news channels saying they were only concerned about TRPs and added that he is not worried about how they portray him.
"I am not saying I am innocent. I am also not saying that they (news channels) are guilty. I am only saying that if I am guilty, then prove it," said Asaram.
He went on to compare himself with the Buddha and Surdas. He claimed that several allegations had been levelled against Surdas, but he went on a fast and lived for 100 years. "Several charges were levelled against the Buddha but he still rules our hearts," he added.
A minor girl has accused Asaram of sexually assaulting her in an ashram in Jodhpur and filed an FIR against him in Delhi's Kamla Market police station. According to the caretaker as well as the owner of the farmhouse Asaram and the girl were present at the place on August 15 - the date on which the alleged sexual assault took place.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot assured of strict action in the case, "If Asaram is proved guilty, he should be punished. Priests and yogis should keep themselves away from such kind of allegations," said Gehlot.
