HAVERI:  Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai categorically stated that the state government will not provide water to any industries through irrigation projects in the state. He said that there are no plans of changing water allocation policy.
He was speaking to reporters after reviewing the progress of Upper Tunga Project (UTP) at a highlevel meeting at the DC office here on Monday. Bommai claimed that the government is putting in best efforts to increase irrigation facilities to farmers."The question of supplying water to industries from any of the dams will not arise. Industries have to make their own arrangements for water by other means," he said.

However, the Minister said that industries will be allowed to store and use runofriver water (water in the stream before it reaches the dam or water released into the stream when the dam touches brim) with the approval of the Water Resources Department. They can store water by constructing their own storage tanks. "A committee led by Water Resources Department's Principal Secretary has been formed to look into the matter. It will hold meetings with Industries Department's Principal Secretary soon in Bangalore to finalise the use of runofwater," he added.
