New Delhi: While the judgement in the Jessica Lall and Priyadarshini Matto cases may have reinstated the faith of the common man in the judicial system in the country, the acquittal of the Safdarjung rape case accused has been disillusioning.
A city court on Monday, acquitted accused Sanjay alias Sonu of all the charges.
Additional Sessions Judge S P Garg while ordering acquittal said there was no evidence on record and the prosecution had failed to prove the allegations against the accused.
According to the prosecution, on September 14, 2005 the victim reported to the Mehrauli police station that she has been raped and robbed of jewellery at knife point by a person in a bathroom on the fifth floor Safdarjung Hospital.
Subsequently, Sanjay of the Hauz Khas area was arrested and charged under section 354 of the IPC and sections 27/54/59 of the Arms Act at the Sarojini Nagar police station on September 16, 2005.
He was then taken to Safdarjung Hospital for a medical examination where she identified him as the same person who raped her.
