New Delhi: The Supreme Court committee inquiring into violence at the Madras High Court last month has come down heavily on the protesting lawyers.
The Supreme Court on Friday, March 6 did not pay any heed to the complaint of the Madras High Court that the remarks against its acting Chief Justice by the B N Srikrishna Committee, which probed clashes between lawyers and the police in Tamil Nadu, was uncalled for.
The report submitted by Justice SriKrishna had called the protesting lawyers as hooligans who were given a free hand by the judges.
Far from being the upholders of the rule of law, the lawyers behaved as hooligans and miscreants, the report had said.
Paul Kanakaraj, President of the Madras High Court Advocates Association said, “The entire fraternity cannot be put to blame and cannot be branded as all being hooligans. It is not so. We have said that the Commission also pointed out police atrocities.”
There were some sharp words against the Madras High Court judges too.
The Madras HC judges are widely accused of having looked the other way on earlier occasions as well, giving the lawyers a free hand.
Justice Srikrishna had said in the report, “My view is that the soft pedalling policy followed by the Madras High Court judges has led to the present piquant situation.”
This certainly has not pleased the Madras High Court lawyers who still refuse to return to work.
A lawyer from Chennai, Raj Shekhar said, “Our association president will also be here. We will call a meeting and decide what next is to be done."
The Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, which was hearing the matter was not impressed with the submission, and said the report has to be seen in a larger context as the Madras High Court strike has been going on for a longer time.
