Chennai: For a song that most people (women in particular) are bashing, Hiphop Tamizha’s slick new video for their song ‘Club le Mabbu le’ has gone viral on YouTube. Believe it or not, the song that had been composed and uploaded in various ‘rough’ versions well before Dhanush made the word ‘Kolaveri’ famous, has now racked up over 7.2 lakh views in the past four days.
Hiphop Tamizha is a Tamil music crew, helmed by singer Aadhi. The song has been online and created controversy a while ago, but the slick new video has promoted the ‘issue’ to a new level. However, a look at the string of abuses in the comments section attached to the video revealed that almost every woman ‘hates’ it, while every other guy thinks that it is a “perfect depiction of how women are”.
Just to clear the air, the song, which was actually titled Senthamizh Penne, is a hip-hop lament about how ‘Tamil’ women are putting their culture to shame by “clubbing, pubbing, drinking, smoking, doing weed, having live-in relationships and so on and so forth” (roughly translated).
Beyond merely throwing a shower of brickbats on Facebook and YouTube, some industrious women have even gone ahead and hit back by making ‘reply’ versions to the song. These have been receiving some great hits online as well. One of them, made by Sofie, an ad professional who lived in Chennai, is particularly popular because of the Tanglish ranting and the catchy profanity.
Though the whole issue turned into a fight between culture vultures and feminists, Hiphop Tamizha chose to stay silent. However, it is pertinent to note that in a previous interview to Express, they had explained that the song was simply about the “kind of girls that they like”. Whichever way it goes, the video and the group’s name are trending heavily. Like they say, all publicity is good publicity.
