THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) will observe black day across the state on July 21 in protest against the government move to sign an agreement with self-financing engineering college managements against the interests of students. The SFI demanded the government to withdraw from the move, which would help the managements to make an exorbitant profit of Rs 50 crore. The fee for merit seats in self-financing colleges (SFCs) has been raised steeply from Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000.The SFI, in a statement here on Wednesday, alleged that some SFCs had given admissions to those who do not have minimum marks. The surprise checks suggested by the High Court to verify the academic standards are not being conducted. It also alleged that almost 50 per cent of the teachers of SFCs do not have the basic qualifications prescribed by the AICTE.The SFI warned of strong protests if the government does not take action against erring colleges. The SFI state secretariat appealed to the students to make the black day observance a success.
