New Delhi: Shoojit Sircar's 'Madras Cafe' which made headlines for its so-called controversial content earned Rs 5.17 crore at the box office on Friday. Going by the response that the film received on the weekend, the film managed to mint around 7 crores.

Trade analyst Taran Adrash took to Twitter to share the box office collection of the John Abraham-Nargis Fakhri starrer. "#MadrasCafe is winning hearts outside India too. UAE+GCC Thu to Sat AED 1.3 million [Rs 2.24 cr]. Very good!" his tweet read.

As Taran Adarsh mentions, the film has managed to do impressive business because of its critical acclaim and the word-of-mouth publicity which has also worked in its favour. "#MadrasCafe Fri 5.17 cr, Sat trends suggest around 7 cr. May even cross 7 cr. Biz on the rise and how. Power of strong word of mouth!" Taran's tweet read.

'Madras Cafe' is set against the backdrop of Sri Lankan civil war and also represents the assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi which happened in 1991. The movie came under the scanner after Tamil activists alleged that it depicts the LTTE cadres in a negative manner.
