CHENNAI: Upgrading the services offered by the State Transport Corporations, Transport Minister V Senthil Balaji on Saturday announced that the passengers can soon book their tickets online on the lines of the Railways. Besides, the number of booking offices would be increased from 49 to 300 across the State.Replying to the discussion on the demands for grants for his department in the State Assembly, he said that through the system, tickets could be booked from anywhere at anytime to any place.The Minister further said with a view to increasing the revenue for the Transport department, parcel and courier services would be introduced in government-run buses. As many as 5,000 e-ticketing machines would be given to the conductors.With the help of these machines, the movement of any bus, the number of passengers travelling in the bus, the distance of travel undertaken by each passenger, the location of the bus and whether the bus is on schedule, can be monitored. The electronic machines would be purchased at a cost of `18.74 crore with 50 per cent financial assistance from the Centre.
