New Delhi: Doctors, nurses and interns at the Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash (LNJP) hospital in Delhi are on a strike. The doctors say they want better security after yet another doctor was beaten up by his patient's relatives.

With the hospital staff was on strike, a number of patients—including a group of children from Ghaziabad who suffered burn injuries—went unattended.

They were referred to the LNJP hospital for better treatment. However, their parents were shocked to find the doctors and nursing staff at the hospital were on an indefinite strike.

Now, they will have to be moved elsewhere. "We have not heard from the authorities about where the children are going to be treated," says Dharmendra, a father.

And it's not just LNJP, the resident doctors, nursing staff, interns and students of Maulana Azad Medical College are also on strike. They are demanding more security for staff at LNJP.

The strike was called after relatives of a patient allegedly beat up the resident doctor and manhandled nurses on Tuesday evening. "Treating the patient is my priority but when I am not safe, how can I help them?" says Babita, a nurse.

The hospital administration has asked those on strike to directly hold talks with the Government. "We were assured by the Government that the security would be tightened but nothing has happened," says resident doctor Jitender Singla.

Health Minister Yoganand Shastri however has a different take: "We have given them security, but if there are more issues, we can sort them out."

Last year as well, a strike was called by the doctors after a similar situation had occurred. As soon as the doctors' demand for increased and improved security is implemented, they say they will call off the strike.
