PARLAKHEMUNDI: Panic gripped Damadua Sevashram School under the Welfare Department following the death of a Class IV student on Tuesday allegedly due to food poisoning.According to sources, about 16 students of the school in Mohana block fell ill after taking meals on Monday. As the students developed symptoms of severe diarrhoea they were shifted to the community health centre at Mohana. However, Sasmita Sabara succumbed in the hospital.District Welfare Officer PC Biswal, who had rushed to the spot, said Sasmita is suspected to have died due to food poisoning adding, another five students are undergoing treatment at the CHC. The rest have been discharged.Earlier some parents had gone to the school to bring back their children but were assured of proper treatment by Mohana Tehsildar S K Tripathy. Inadequate infrastructure and unhygienic surroundings are the main culprits, sources said. For 270 students of the school, there is only one tube-well and two latrines.
