Tackling the grey area
Tackling the grey area

Grey, the colour that surrounds us in our ‘concrete’ society, is the colour she uses most in her paintings. Bindhi Rajagopal once again enthralls us with her contemporary art. Inspired by the diminishing presence of nature and greenery, her acrylic paintings reflect all aspects of city life.  “Everything I see or read on a daily basis, consciously or unconsciously finds its way into my paintings,” says the artist. Hence the reflection of the different facets of urbanisation in her work comes as no surprise. Through her paintings, the artist attempts to convey the message of monotony that prevails in society.

She collaborates environmental issues like global warming along with the negative consequences of infrastructural development in her canvas. The predominant colours in her paintings include mostly grey and white which portray the absence of God- given vibrancy in nature.

Competent in both two dimensional as well as three dimensional paintings, Bindhi explains with a smile that painting on large canvases has never been a matter of concern for her.

The use of yellow in some of her paintings brings about a camouflaged effect especially in her ‘Black Forest’ series.

She blends the colours yellow, green and grey to depict the sky, thereby once again emphasising the lack of clear skies due to pollution.

A mother, a teacher and a full time painter, this multi-tasker has been active in this field for the past 20 years. Influenced by Picasso’s Cubism and M F Hussain’s style, Bindhi’s paintings are thought provoking. Her paintings the 'Black Forest' series, ‘Branch-less Nest’, ‘Harbour View’ and ‘Diamond Cuts’ are brushed with detailed strokes of perfection.

Some of her works have been selected for international shows like The United Art Fair, Delhi and The India Art Fair, Mumbai.

This teacher of Gregorian Public School is also the owner of ‘Bindhi Art Gallery’. The exhibition of her paintings ‘The Edge - 2012’ will be on in Durbar Hall till  August 25.
