New Delhi: Union Home Ministry has cleared Foreign Contributions (Regulations) Act (FCRA) license for Teesta Setalvad's NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace (CJP).
The FCRA license for Setalvad's NGO CJP and Sabrang Trust had been cancelled for alleged misuse of foreign funds and the NGOs put on prior permission list earlier this year.
There is also a CBI enquiry pending against Setalvad's NGOs for misuse of foreign funds.
Javed Aanand, of CJP confirmed to CNN-News18 that they have received a communication from MHA regarding FCRA.
"Yes, FCRA for one NGO - CJP has been cleared, MHA has communicated" Javed Aanand said.
The Union Home Ministry, however, appeared clueless as to how the clearance was given to an NGO which has been put on prior permission list and whose patrons are facing a criminal enquiry.
Union Home Secretary was stumped when CNN news18 asked him how FCRA clearance was given to CJP.
"I have asked my joint secretary to check. We should know by Wednesday," he said.
A top MHA officer on condition of anonymity said "Sabrang Trust's FCRA was cancelled in June itself So any renewal letter if issued after that is meaningless. CJP clearance has not happened in last two months certainly.
If it has happened before then that too should be cancelled."
This is the second instance after Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) where an NGO facing criminal enquiry has been given FCRA clearance by MHA. After zakir Naik's clearance four MHA staffers, including a joint secy level officer, were suspended for wrongful clearance to IRF.
