TIRUNELVELI: Sunday was perhaps the biggest day in the lives of Sankaragomathi and Madasami. They got married at Sankaranarayanar  Swamy temple here at Sankarankoil. It was an early muhurtam as Madasami tied the knot at 7 am.Marriage done, they turned their attention to the next important task of the day — exercising their franchise at the by-election for the Sankarankoil seat. The couple queued up at the Vaniga Visya Primary School polling station at Sankarankoil before casting their ballots. They were not the only newlyweds at the polling booths. Hours after getting married, Muthumani Kesavaraman and Sankaragomathi (not to be confused with her namesake) went to the Sankarankoil Municipality School booth for voting.Incidentally, the presiding deity at Sankarankoil is Sankaranarayanar and his consort is Gomathi Amman. At Tiruvenkadam, groom Pothilingam (29) of Kela Tiruvenkadam, with a garland around his neck, walked into a polling booth at a primary school in the area and cast his vote. The newly-weds became a metaphor for voter enthusiasm as the bypoll witnessed a very high turnout — a total of 77.44 per cent voters exercised their franchise. Polling, which began at 8 am, was brisk and it passed off peacefully.
