Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday announced a slew of measures for the differently-abled in the state. At present, 2,390 differently-abled children, attending primary training centres and nursery schools across the State, are availing of the travel concession while commuting by State-owned transport corporation buses. Hereafter, one companion to these children can also avail of this concession.

Under the scheme, visually impaired persons are being given foldable walking canes painted in white and red. For this, the CM has ordered supply of reflective foldable canes to be provided to 5,000 visually impaired persons at an expenditure of Rs 10 lakh, an official release here said.

Besides, at present, a maintenance assistance of Rs 1,000 per month is being provided to 77,112 mentally challenged persons who cannot take care of themselves on their own. Aimed at increasing the number of beneficiaries under the scheme, the percentage of disability eligible for getting this assistance would be reduced from 60 per cent to 45 per cent.

To curb dropouts, cash incentives are being given to those studying in Classes X, XI and XII. Jayalalithaa has ordered extension of this scheme to students of special schools run by the Differently Abled Welfare Department and government-recognised special schools.

For students of Classes X and XI, Rs 1,500 would be given as incentive, while Class XII students would get Rs 2,000. This amount would be deposited in Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. For this scheme, the CM has sanctioned Rs 22.34 lakh. The scheme would benefit 1,359 students.
