CHENNAI: The State government has estimated tax revenue, including excise and sales tax from sale of liquor, to grow by at least 16 per cent during 2012-13 compared to the previous year. Speaking to reporters, Finance Secretary K Shanmugam said the total tax revenue from sale of alcoholic beverages is estimated to be `20,600 crore, out of which Rs 11,474 crore will be the excise component while the rest will be sales tax.On the proposal to mobilise additional revenue through tax on alcohol, he said the ‘last point of sale of alcohol at bars, hotels and restaurants had been left untapped,’ and that this will now be covered and levied a 14.5 per cent tax. Similarly, alcohol purchased, procured and brought into TN from outside will be taxed at the rate of 14.5 per cent. The government hoped to mop up through the additional levy, at around Rs 150 crore. On the projected revenue from hike in fee for registration of properties, he said that it would fetch the government Rs 600 crore. He also pointed out that major subsidies have been earmarked for food (Rs 4,900 crore), Social Security Pension (Rs 3,820 crore), TANGEDCO (Rs 3,069 crore), free mixers and grinders (Rs 2,000 crore), free laptops (Rs 1,500 crore), nutritious meal scheme (Rs 1,423 crore) and green house programme (Rs 1,200 crore).
