THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: SMS alerts will henceforth reach traders whenever a consignment of goods in their name or a firm’s name pass through any checkpost in the state’s borders. The novel facility is intended to put an end the clandestine transfer of goods through checkposts by misusing the sales tax registration number of traders, Finance Minister K M Mani has said. Addressing a review meet of top Finance Department officials on augmenting sales tax collection, Mani said that the policy of the State Government would be to support those ST officials who are sincere in checking the tax evasion. “Erring officials will face stern action,” he warned. The minister directed officials to ensure that districts where tax mobilisation had gone down to take steps to check the trend. He called for quick action to clear ending files related to collection of tax dues and coordination with district collectors on revenue recovery proceedings.
