BHUBANESWAR: BJP leader Uma Ballav Rath on Thursday resigned from the party and announced plans to lead Shree Jagannath Surakshya Abhiyan to protect the property of Lord Jagannath. In a letter to BJP State president Jual Oram, Rath said he was resigning from the primary membership of the party not on account of any dissatisfaction with the party, but because of his endeavour which is apolitical in nature and requires involvement of the people irrespective of political affiliations. “I have been entrusted by the people of my area to protect the Lord Jagannath land and save the pride of the State which is threatened by an unholy alliance between the State Government and Vedanta company with questionable credentials,” he said. Rath, who had been fighting against the Vedanta university project, said his aim was to retrieve Lord Jagannath’s land from Anil Agarwal Foundation, promoter of the varsity project. The former MLA had been planning a yatra to create awareness on saving the property of Lord Jagannath.
