The familiar sight of people tuning into All India Radio (AIR) news bulletins to catch up on news may soon be a thing of the past.
The Centre has decided to shut down vernacular news bulletins on AIR.
However news bulletins in Hindi and English will continue. According to the government officials, it's uneconomical to sustain the vernacular bulletins.
There are 419 radio stations across the country which beam news in regional language. It's mostly worked by the casual staff.
Many of these workers in Indore and Pune have already been sent letters informing them of the shutdown and many others have been told to leave.
As of now, FM channels are only allowed to air entertainment programmes and not hard news. All that could change soon.
But reality is also that All India Radio has not been a profit making venture. It's seen as being stagnant and not state of the art yet.
The government wants to change this perception. A start has been made for example with AIR being on Twitter and giving Twitter alerts
