BHUBANESWAR: Veteran journalist and unionist Rabi Narayan Mohanty died here on Sunday after prolonged illness. He was 68 and is survived by wife, four sons and three daughters. Mohanty breathed his last at a private hospital in the early hours. He was cremated at Swargadwar in Puri. After starting his career as a journalist in the ‘60s, Mohanty had worked in several Oriya newspapers, including ‘Kalinga’ and ‘Prajatantra’, and was the editor of ‘Nyayabati’ till his death. A founder member of Orissa Journalists’ Union, he had worked as its secretary and president. Mohanty was also president of Orissa Journalists’ Welfare Board and vice-president of National Union of Journalists. Members of the Cabinet, Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh, leaders of political parties, MPs, MLAs and journalists paid last respects to Mohanty at his Bhubaneswar residence. Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare said his demise is a great loss to the world of journalism. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said Mohanty always fought for the rights of journalists.
