CHENNAI: A fine classical tradition and a strong penchant for middle tempo with a sense of balance, between the several phases of the concert, marked the concert of vocalist NC Soundaravalli, who recently performed for the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy. The vocalist has the benefit of being tutored by legendary Mudikondan Venkatrama Iyer and Maharajapuram Santhanam. The opening varnam of GN Balasubramaniam, in Raga Ranjini (Ambrouka padamae) was robust. It was followed by (Sri Mahaganapathim) Raga Nattai of Mayuram Vishwanatha Sastri, which was delivered with pious expressional vocabulary. The Raga Vasantha Bhairavi Keerthana (Nee Dayaradha) of Thyagaraja, was taken next and came off with full emotional content. It was followed by Raga Hamsanatham (Pantureethi) of Thyagaraja, which was delineated with classical technique. One needs to appreciate her for her rendition of Raga Karaharapriya (Pakkala Nilabadi) in the traditional format, with characteristic and unmistakable sancharas. Her vintage music was presented with full appreciation of the Sahitya, impressing us with chastity and clarity in exposition. The Keerthana (Subramanyena) of Dikshitar in Raga Sudhdhadhanyasi, presented next was solid and the swara manipulation revealed her poise in presentation. In between her rendition of (Sri Chakraraja Nilaye) of GN Balasubramaniam in Raga Sivasakthi and (Bhavayami Gopalam) of Annamacharya in Raga Yamuna Kalyani were zestful, with an eye on harmony in her performance.I returned home with lingering thoughts in mind, with nostalgic memories of legend Mudikondan Venkatrama Iyer, known for his knowledge of Pallavi with perfect understanding of the intracies of the laya.As an old timer, this vocalist with eclectic vidwat was able to translate the presentation with abounding manodharma.
