THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has criticised the Central Government for its decision to allow 51 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail sector catering to multi-brand commodities. Achuthanandan said in a statement here on Monday that the Central Government was surrendering the retail sector to the foreign monopolies by this decision. Even during the tenure of the previous UPA Government, when the Left parties had extended outside support to the ruling front, there was a move in this direction, the statement said. However, the move did not succeed following strong opposition from the Left parties. Following this, monopolies had been exerting pressure on the Centre. The entry of foreign multi-national companies would reduce the internal job prospects in the country, which is already diminishing, he said.
