The ‘brow crown' made waves earlier this month when it became the latest quirky eyebrow look to go viral on social media, but 2017 has seen several unorthodox brow trends come and go. We take a look at three of the biggest (and oddest).
Brow crowns
The regally bizarre ‘brow crown' hit the news earlier this month, courtesy of aspiring Danish makeup artist Sofie Petersen. The beauty fan created the look by brushing her brows upwards to form pointed tufts, before adorning the tip of each point with a gemstone sticker for a dazzling result that has received over 12,000 likes on Instagram. The reaction was mixed, but has also sparked more than one copycat look since going viral.
Squiggle brows
Squiggle makeup first took off back in September after beauty vlogger Promise Tamang shed light on the new trend. To master the controversial ‘squiggle brow,' beauty fans crafted the eyebrows into a wavy shape and used makeup to exaggerate their artistry by covering up the outlines with concealer and layering up eyeshadow colors underneath the brow. Some fans ‘squiggled' the entire brow, while others just got creative with the ends, but hundreds of beauty experimentalists took to social media to show off the results via the hashtag #squigglebrows.
Braided brows
September also saw the birth of the ‘braided brow,' which teenage makeup artist Eros Gomez inadvertently started as a reaction to the rise of the ‘squiggle brow.' Since braiding the eyebrow is as impractical as it sounds, Gomez kickstarted a trend for people digitally altering their brows for Instagram, or using makeup to paint on braided effects instead. "I spent almost an hour using things like hair gel and spirit gum in an effort to braid my tiny brow hairs with no avail," he told Allure at the time. "Once I realized it wasn't going to work, I decided to just edit the braid on."
