Selena Gomez recently revealed that she can't give birth. Read about some of the conditions that can complicate pregnancy.

Singer and actor Selena Gomez has revealed a deeply personal aspect of her life, that she can’t have children due to medical reasons. In a recent interview, the 32-year-old artist shared the emotional journey she’s been on after learning that she would not be able to safely carry a child, calling it something she had to “grieve.” “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Selena shared.

“I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she added. Over the years, Selena has spoken about her lupus diagnosis, a chronic autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks healthy tissues. According to reports from the BBC, lupus is incurable, but its symptoms can be managed through medications. Back in 2017, Selena also shared the story of her kidney transplant, a direct result of her lupus.

Additionally, she has been open about living with bipolar disorder. A couple of years ago, she discussed how the medication she takes for her bipolar disorder might prevent her from having a safe pregnancy, during a Rolling Stone interview.

Despite these conditions, the Good for You singer is hopeful about being a mother. In the Vanity Fair interview, she shared her thoughts about surrogacy and adoption. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,” she explained.

However, she now feels at peace with the idea. “I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people,” she added.

Pregnancy and childbirth are incredibly complex processes, often influenced by various factors including maternal health conditions, complications during pregnancy, and environmental influences. According to the National Institute of Health, US, some of the common conditions that affect pregnancy include:

High blood pressure: If not managed properly, high blood pressure can lead to complications such as preeclampsia and reduced blood flow to the placenta.

Gestational diabetes: This form of diabetes develops during pregnancy and can result in high birth weight, preterm birth or other complications if not managed.

Infections: Various infections can pose risks during pregnancy, impacting both the mother’s and the baby’s health.

Preeclampsia: A serious pregnancy complication marked by high blood pressure, it can result in damage to the liver or kidneys and can be life-threatening for both the mother and the child.

Preterm labour: Labour that starts before 37 weeks of pregnancy can lead to numerous complications for the baby, such as breathing problems and developmental delays.

Depression and anxiety: Mental health conditions like these can affect pregnancy, leading to complications both during and after childbirth.

These are some of the common conditions that affect pregnancy. Proper medical attention is required to ensure a healthy pregnancy and childbirth to ensure the safety of mothers and their newborns.
