Best known for his portrayal of ‘Sherlock’ in the television series of the same name, English actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been known to venture into theatre, movies and television alike. As the actor turns 39 today, we bring to you a list of television shows, apart from ‘ Sherlock’ starring the multi- faceted actor:
Hawking: Originally aired on BBC in the year 2004, the television film was the first on screen depiction of theoretical physicist, Professor Stephen Hawking. Deemed to be one of Cumberbatch’s finest performances, the telefilm garnered for him several BAFTA nominations along with other accolades.
To the Ends of the Earth: The character of Edmund Talbot played by Benedict in this critically acclaimed BBC television miniseries, was appreciated by those who watched. In his own words, Cumberbatch described this three episode series as "a sort of rock and roll 1812 period drama about a young man’s gap year. It’s full of filth, dirt, discovery, sex, drugs, dancing, love, spiritual awakenings and massive sweeping changes!"
Small Island: Set against the backdrop of Jamaican immigrants set in London in 1948, the character of Bernard played by Benedict Cumberbatch got him a nomination for a BAFTA award in 2010 for best supporting actor. Cumberbatch played the role of a person who is psychologically disturbed due to the war.
Parade’s End: Originally aired on BBC and HBO in 2012 and 2013 respectively, the series is said to be one of the finest works by Cumberbatch. Gathering for itself six BAFTA TV nominations, the telefilm depicts a love triangle during the World War I.
Fortysomething: A 2003 comedy-drama series was one of Cumberbatch’s lesser known works where he plays the role Rory Slippery a sex-obsessed teenager who lives with his parents and his two other brothers. The show was not successful initially, but following Cumberbatch’s success, it did well on DVD.
