Motivation is not the supernatural. It isn’t anything that’s available for consumption in bottles or pills. But it is definitely an aspect that one can instill and then make several efforts to harness it. Actor Diljit Dosanjh, who has achieved almost a cult status with people across different generations appreciating his projects, has the privilege of cutting down his working hours, and avoid taking on intense work pressure. But he is happy to set new goals, see them, feel them, and even hear the sound (of applause) that accompany their completion, which is why he stays motivated in life.
“I can never think of taking my work lightly. Agar aap apne kaam se 1% minus karte jaogey toh peechey se 1% add karta hua koi aapki cheez ko achieve kar lega. But the rule of destiny states that if an individual won’t make an error, the other person will never get a chance to make it big. As an actor I know that I will make mistakes. But I want to minimize those errors. Main chahta hoon ki mujhse galtiyan thodi hon aur main bas tikaa rahoon aur kaam karta rahoon."
So while Diljit makes sure he is heading in the right direction and stays focused on the most valuable opportunities, he doesn’t feel there is any need to stay insecure in professional life. “Insecurity is a wrong word. A person should never be insecure of anybody in life. I feel one should stay motivated enough to improve himself. An insecure person will never be happy; he will end up doing all the wrong things."
After a successful 2015 which saw the release of two of his films ‘Sardaarji’ and ‘Mukhtiar Chadha’, Diljit is ready for the first release of this year ‘Ambarsariya’, which isn’t just about good humour. “This is the first time that I’m attempting a thriller comedy. Even though the film features several good artistes, I’d say its story and screenplay are amazing which is why I agreed to do this film. I had never seen anything like this before. Its storytelling is also new for Punjabi cinema. I completed the film dubbing a few days back and I have to say it is a film I wouldn’t want to miss."
And as Diljit says, the viewers shouldn’t judge the film by its trailer. “What you all have in the promos so far has just been a layer of comedy and thrill. But there is a lot more to the film. We have talked about Sardar Udham Singh in the film too. And yes, it also deals with several issues that have been ailing Punjab. Since I can’t reveal much before the film releases, what I can say is that the film comes with several important lessons. Love for the land, significance of relationships and a lot more. Even though we have kept the element of fun to entertain, that’s not what the film only offers."
The film’s trailer has also been gaining huge buzz for one of Diljit’s dialogue where he prefers the word ‘set’ over ‘fasana’ for one of the girls he has fallen for. But the actor doesn’t see any harm in using the term. "Jab jhagda hota hai toh uske baad bhi toh settlement hoti hai. So it is used to sort out the issue and make it look like a settlement. ‘Fasana’ is a wrong word."
One of the several lessons that ‘Ambarsariya’ offers is the significance of community and sardaari, which is well explained with dialogues such as ‘Pagg badi kurbani naal mili hai’ and ‘Jaan nalo wadd pyaari hondi hai kaum te sardaari’. Diljit, who had earlier reacted strongly to American Sikh actor Waris Ahluwalia being barred from US-bound flight over turban row in an earlier interview to IBNLive Movies, shared a thought which he had missed.
“Mai kisi dharma ke liye nahi bol raha. Hum sarey insaan hain. But what I didn’t share even when the incident had happened was – Hum kaun hain aur kya hain – kahin yehi cheez bataney hum log peechey toh nahi reh gaye? Ya toh wohh samajh nahi reh rahe hain ya hum bata nahi paa rahein hain ki hum kaun hain. I can understand what Waris Ahluwalia must have experienced when he was subjected to that humiliation. Had someone said to me something similar, even I wouldn’t have boarded the flight. After all, it is an issue for pride. We all fight for it. So yes, Ahluwalia turban ban was a bad incident which I wouldn’t want anybody else to face ever. As a community we all should do anything to reinstate the respect for our turban."
Much like any other star, Diljit also makes a conscious attempt to be careful what he says in public. “It will be wrong to say that I don’t think twice before speaking to public. I can anything I feel when I’m at home, or in my car. But yes I have to be extra cautious when it comes to the camera. We all are humans, and we all make mistakes – but as a star it is out responsibility to pay extra attention to what we say, how we react and behave in public. It isn’t about relatives listening to us who’d reprimand and say ‘Aisa nahi bolna hai’. I have met several senior artistes from our industry who feel there was no such pressure earlier. But at a time when social media is so active, we cant afford to be laidback. When we do live shows, we are scared. Agar koi galti hogi youtube pe chali jaegi aur bolengey ki yeh banda aisa hai. People won’t even try to know what had happened in reality, but would jump to conclusion.
