Angad Bedi’s career took a significant turn with his breakout role in the critically acclaimed film ‘Pink’, which not only propelled him into the limelight but also brought about a personal transformation. Reflecting on his journey, Angad shared a poignant memory involving his late father, the legendary cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, who was deeply affected by Angad’s decision to cut his hair in his late teens. This decision, though purely professional, created a rift between father and son that lasted for years.
In a recent episode of Cyrus Broacha’s talk show, ‘Cyrus Says’, Angad opened up about the emotional impact of his choice. He revealed that his father, rooted in their Sikh heritage and as a direct descendant of Guru Nanak, was “hurt” by the decision, a feeling that ran deeper than mere anger. “He was hurt, not angry. Hurt is a deeper emotion than anger. I am a Bedi, a direct descendent of Guru Nanak. There are a lot of people who advised that I should grow my hair again. Maybe I will someday,” Angad explained, adding that they didn’t speak for nearly two decades after he made the change.
The young actor’s decision was driven by industry pressures, as he was advised that his long hair wouldn’t suit the roles he sought in Bollywood. Despite the personal cost, Angad committed fully to his career, a choice that eventually paid off with his role in ‘Pink’. The film not only garnered critical acclaim but also served as a turning point in his relationship with his father.
“Kya karta main? I thought if I have to go into it full throttle, I will do what it takes. Now, my father was upset for 20 years, till the time Pink released. After the film, he told me, ‘Son, now you justify your haircut to me,’” he added.
Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away on October 23 last year after a prolonged illness, left his son with advice that still resonates. Recalling the moment after the film’s release, Angad shared, “He hugged me after Pink. I remember I had cut my hair at 18-19, and Pink happened when I was 33. So, till that time he didn’t talk. He was really hurt, and that’s the time he hugged me and said, ‘You’ve chosen your path and you’re going to do well. So, carry on. But choose your films wisely after this.”
Angad Bedi, who has also appeared in films like ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, ‘Dear Zindagi’, and ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’, had a busy 2023, with notable projects including ‘Hi Nanna’, ‘Ghoomer’, and ‘Lust Stories 2’.
