After the stupendous debacle of ‘Aagadu’, Srinu Vaitla has tried to come up with an ‘original’ story for ‘Bruce Lee – The Fighter’. As the title loudly proclaims, Ram Charan is called Bruce Lee for the risky stunts he does in films within the film. He’s a stuntman and a body double in ‘Bruce Lee’. That’s just to say that there’s logic for the action scenes and the million times he emerges victorious even when there are goons twice his size and twice a dozen in number.
Though the story revolves around a handful of people, it is only Charan that does the job. He does everything. He fights like a tiger, dances like he needs to win the competition among the best dancers in Telugu cinema, cries like there’s a fundamental understanding of sentiments, runs like there’s a dog chasing him, and throws punch dialogues at everybody even when all that is required is a ‘you’re welcome’ smile.
Agreed that there’s minimum entertainment in the film, but how long can one rely on moments that are sparse and guarded in disguise? Brahmanandam is the mainstay of Vaitla’s comedic sense. I was worried when that went for a toss. Brahmi is beginning to disappoint the audience. Mukesh Rishi reminds Brahmi in a scene who plays a police officer that he’s up for retirement next year. Was that line for the film or his career? He needs to look around and start working anew. His brand of comedy has hit an all-time low. There were many ‘laugh out loud’ episodes in ‘Dookudu’ whenever he appeared. Depressingly, that’s missing in ‘Bruce Lee’.
Rakul Preet is dangerously stupid and also gorgeous. Hollywood’s early fascination with the dumb blonde stereotype has caught on with the folks here. Our heroines look pretty in songs and sound dumb when they are having a conversation with the hero. On a repeat mode, we are made to watch actresses get dumber and dumber while the heroes as intelligent dudes complete their missions successfully. Arun Vijay was fascinating as Victor in ‘Yennai Arindhaal’ earlier this year yet he cuts a sorry figure in a similar role as Deepak Raj in this film. Kriti Kharbanda is appreciably good as an aspiring IAS officer. But isn’t it boring to show her with a book always for that purpose? The making matters, Mr. Vaitla.
When one of the main villains is unavailable for comment since he is warming his frozen feet in a coffin, there’s absolutely no need for another grand showdown. The film ends there. Had that happened, Vaitla couldn’t have invited Mega Star to his film. So, the needless cameo appearance drags the mediocre film further.
This ‘Bruce Lee’ is more talk and less action. Bring the big film soon, Mega Star. Enough of teasers!
