Ever since Warner Bros. Discovery made an exciting announcement about a full-fledged television series based on the beloved Harry Potter books, fans have been eagerly waiting for the return of Hogwarts magic back on screens. Scheduled to premiere in 2026, the show is expected to span seven seasons, based on the seven books. While further details on the next generation ‘Muggles’ and ‘Wizards’ are under wraps, Gary Oldman, who played the role of Sirius Black, Harry Potter’s godfather seems ready to take on a new role in the HBO TV series.
Oldman opened up about whether he would be reprising the iconic role for HBO. Upon being asked by IndieWire if the makers had approached him for the show at the 76th Primetime Emmys, Oldman added, “No one’s approached me. I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people. Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”
Further, he added that he has a soft corner for Sirius Black, which he believes didn’t get enough space on the screen. He said, “I love Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up, and then he went through the veil.”
For those unaware, Richard Harris played Professor Albus Dumbledore in the first two films, including Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. However, his sudden death led makers to bring in the legendary Michael Gambon, who took on the iconic role for the rest of the franchise.
More On The Harry Potter Series
According to reports, the Harry Potter HBO series will cover the entirety of JK Rowling’s book series, which the executives hinted at spanning a decade. While Rowling would be involved with the adaptation in some capacity, it is yet to be seen who takes on the lead roles as Harry, Hermoine and Ronald.
“We have been trying to be very close to the vest. We haven’t gone out to agencies. We have our own internal process where we’ve been thinking about people, but we have not wanted to go out into the world. Now that the news is out there, we will start working with the Blair Partnership, and we’ll start going out to the business,” said HBO chief Casey Bloys during a media interaction.
