Kader Khan Was Not Just My 'Ustaad', But a Father Figure to Me, Says Govinda
Govinda remembers Kader Khan, his co-star of several hit Bollywood comedies like Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1 and Saajan Chale Sasural.

The two of them collaborated over several years to produce some of the most entertaining comedies in Indian cinema. For an entire generation of Bollywood fans, Kader Khan meant comic roles as father, uncle, father-in-law, etc in Govinda’s films. David Dhawan brought the two together to deliver hit comedies like Aankhen, Dulhe Raja, Coolie No.1, Saajan Chale Sasural, Raja Babu and Hero No. 1, among others.

On Tuesday, Govinda remembered Kader Khan as a father figure, saying that words couldn't describe his sorrow at the death of his co-star of several years.

More often than not, the onscreen chemistry and camaraderie between Khan and Govinda was more entertaining and significant to the film than the chemistry between the hero and heroine. Take Dulhe Raja for example. The film is all about Govinda trying to convince his girlfriend's rich father to let him marry his daughter. The whole film is full of funny exchanges and hilarious sequences involving Govinda and Khan, Raveena Tandon has very little screen time.

Some of the most memorable Kader Khan-Govinda pairings were in films like Aankhen, Raja Babu, Hero No 1 and Rajaji, where they played father and son.  Then the two were seen complementing each other as father-in-law and son-in-law in films like Coolie No. 1, Dulhe Raja, Joru Ka Ghulam and Kunwara.

Putting them together in the same frame produced comedy gold. It was as if Khan had met his match in Govinda in the genre of comedy. Throughout the '90s, the two of them acted in a series of comedies that created a niche of their own in Hindi cinema.
