Hollywood star Zendaya takes on the role of tennis prodigy Tashi in the upcoming film Challengers. As the press tour for Luca Guadagnino’s highly anticipated movie kicks off, a premiere was held on April 8 at Cinema Barberini in Rome, Italy, where Zendaya made a stunning appearance. During the event, the star discussed how she navigated intimate scenes in the film alongside her co-stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor.
On the red carpet, the 27-year-old Euphoria star commended the presence of an intimacy coordinator for ensuring a “safe” environment on set. Zendaya expressed, “We had an intimacy coordinator which was fantastic and very helpful, because it was important that we felt safe.”
Since the Call Me by Your Name director’s film is suffused with ‘intense’ erotic scenes between Zendaya, Mike, and Josh, the trio needed to find ways to make each other feel at ease on and off camera. Speaking about the same, Zendaya added, “I spoke with my colleagues so that we could find a way to feel at ease. We played tennis together, we went out together, we rehearsed together. We got to bond and feel good with each other.”
Mike agreed with Zendaya’s statement and emphasised that they were able to build a genuine friendship before filming, which became the foundation of their work on the film.
In the film Challengers, the story centres around Tashi Duncan, portrayed by Zendaya, an aspiring tennis star whose dreams are shattered by a career-ending injury. Transitioning to the role of coach for her colleague Art, played by Mike, Tashi discovers a new purpose. Their professional relationship evolves into a romance, leading to marriage. However, tensions arise when Art’s success leads him to the Challenger Tour, where Tashi faces her ex-boyfriend Patrick (Josh).
After several delays, Challengers is finally gearing up for its release in Italian theaters on April 24 and in the US on April 26. The film, produced by MGM and Pascal Pictures, has been distributed under the banner of Warner Bros.
