Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati seems to working on a single-cylinder bike that could be a younger sibling of its currently offered Hypermotard 950.
The upcoming motorcycle was spied testing in Italy and may rival the KTM 690 SMC R once it hits the market.
Going by the spy shots, it is evident that the bike is likely to have a single-cylinder engine. It shares some features with the Hypermotard 950 including a sleek built and high-mounted twin exhaust system. The placement of the USD telescopic forks, rear subframe, rear mono-shock, and headlights also looks similar, according to Carandbike.
Some features like skinnier tyres and double-sided swingarm indicate that the bike may be introduced as a smaller version of the Hypermotard 950. The test mule also has a single-disc setup at the front.
According to RushLane, the rumoured single-cylinder Ducati could get a 659cc engine. This is because the Italian bike maker registered a single-cylinder motorcycle with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The registered bike has a 659cc motor with a 4V head and seems to have a SOHC setup and liquid cooling jacket.
Meanwhile, the KTM 690 SMC R has a 690cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine which is mated to a 6-speed transmission. It generates max power of 55 kW (73.7 hp) and peak torque of 73.5 Nm. KTM says that the engine’s “resonator chamber” balances out the pulses in the intake while riding and makes the throttle response smoother and reduced vibrations.
The bike offers three riding modes – Street and Supermoto. The modes can be switched over with ease from the handlebar, making riding fun. The machine also has traction control which can be disabled when needed.
The quick shifters on the bike make shifting gears seamless and ensure a smooth riding experience. KTM 690 SMC R also features cornering ABS so that enters corners with confidence even at significant speed. The technology allows the rider to use full braking power in all conditions, even when you are leaning while turning. This comes in handy on hilly roads and when you need to achieve a good lap time.
Talking about the Hypermotard 950, it is powered by a 937cc engine that churns out a max power of 114 hp and peak torque of 96Nm. The bike is 870mm tall and weighs 178 kg.
