Former England skipper Nasser Hussain and ex-Indian coach Ravi Shastri were left in awe of the ‘genius’ of Virat Kohli who surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds by smashing his 50th ODI ton in front of the legend himself. After reaching the historic milestone, Kohli paid his ‘hero’ Sachin the ultimate tribute by bowing down to him, while he was at loss of words to describe the feeling of being the first player to smash a half-century of ODI tons.
Hussain, who played with Sachin said that he had never expected that he would see someone going past Tendulkar’s record in his lifetime, while calling Virat Kohli the ‘best in the world’.
Kohli played a magnificent knock of 117 runs against New Zealand, while Shreyas Iyer also slammed a century to help India score 397/4 against the Kiwis in a crunch semifinal fixture of the World Cup 2023.

Thanks to Mohammed Shami’s fiery 7-wicket haul, the Black Caps folded for just 327, however, before their inning, Hussain and former Indian coach Ravi Shastri were left in awe of Kohli’s brilliance.
“You could not write a better script, to be honest. I played against Sachin and I never thought I would see someone go past Sachin in my lifetime, to be honest. Sachin was the best batter I have ever seen,” Hussain said on Star Sports.
“For this lad to do it on Sachin’s home ground with Sachin in attendance in a World Cup semi-final, with such style and power, it was just awesome. The modern-day master has just gone past the Little Master. He’s the best in the world, it’s as simple as that. He’s a genius,” the Englishman added.

Shastri meanwhile lauded Kohli for his determination, and work ethic during the near 3-year barren spell during which he failed to score a single century and faced much criticism.
“I think it he deserves every bit of it, you know. Just for his work ethics, professionalism, attention to detail and the way he prepares. He went through a period where he couldn’t get a run, couldn’t get a hundred for 3 years, but his work ethics never changed. He was determined, he carried on in the same fashion, and he’s been rewarded for that hard work he put in at that time,” Shastri said.
