India captain Rohit Sharma may have a huge fan following across the globe but there was a time when he had to face abuse from Indian fans overseas. Former India pacer Praveen Kumar recalled an incident from one of the Australia tours where the Indian fans had abused a young Rohit, leaving the batter agitated and forcing him to hit back.
Speaking with Lallantop.com, Praveen recollected the incident and surprisingly said ‘our own’ abused us in Australia.
“I have never got into a fight with anyone. We three were there me, Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary. We were at the nets. I think it was in Melbourne. Our own abuse us. They were Indian fans who were abusing Rohit Sharma. His patience ended and he shot back at them and I joined. I am telling you that it is our own who abuse us,” Praveen Kumar said on The Lallantop.
Rohit has returned to India’s T20I set-up and will be seen in action against Afghanistan in the 1st T20I in Mohali on Thursday. Virat Kohli has also been named in the squad but the former captain will be unavailable for the 3-match series opener owing to personal reasons.
Praveen further spoke about his bonding with Kohli and said his dedication towards the sport has made him what he is currently.
“Great guy. He knows how to score runs. That is why he has reached such heights. Working on his body, proper diet – He knows it well. He is my younger brother,” Praveen said.
The former pacer also reserved huge praise for legendary MS Dhoni. Praveen asserted that Dhoni’s leadership skills are unmatchable as the 2-time World Cup-winning captain knows how to use a player.
“Mahi Bhai Ka Koi Jawaab Nahi. He knew how to use a player and when to use them,” said Kumar, adding, “he used to set the field and ask the bowler to bowl. And that’s what a good captain is, who gives the ball to the bowler and only asks to bowl, then it is up to the bowler to understand what he has to bowl.”
