Stuck in the Uttarkashi tunnel for the last 16 days, the workers seem to get a relief soon with the authorities inching closer to a major breakthrough on Tuesday.
While all the preparations are underway to save life, the authorities are also ensuring proper post-evacuation care.
“Post rescue care is as important as the rescue itself. The workers will be taken to the hospital at the earliest. For that, arrangements have been done for air and road transport depending on their health and conditions,” an official aware of the matter told News18.
They will be taken most likely to Dehradun or the district hospital as per the need.
“A team of doctors are at the incident location. There are 41 ambulances, one for each worker, and two helicopters if anyone needs immediate hospitalisation. Further, the Air Force will also be involved, if needed,” the official said, adding that a Chinook helicopter is also stationed in Chinyalisaur, for airlifting the workers in case of any medical emergency.
Not just physical care but the authorities are also ready to provide mental care to the workers.
The official continued that being stuck for so long in a closed space, the workers may face psychological traumas as well.
“Psychiatrists have been in touch with the workers since the last few days. They will be given proper counselling post rescue as well,” they added.
The 41 workers have been trapped in an under-construction tunnel, a portion of which collapsed on November 12.
The collapse occurred in the tunnel from Silkyara to Barkot due to debris falling in a 60-metre stretch on the Silkyara side. The area of entrapment, measuring 8.5 metres in height and 2 km in length, is the built-up portion of the tunnel, offering safety to the labours with available electricity and water supply.
Last week, the authorities also managed to supply fresh cooked food and do video communication with the workers. Before that they could only pass packed food items.
